Indigenous Heritage Circle (IHC) × Black Legacy Collective (BLC) × Black Heritage Caucus (BHC)

In October 2025, BHC, IHC, and BLC convened an intergenerational Indigenous and Black Knowledge Exchange in Nova Scotia. Guided by Indigenous protocols and shared stewardship, the gathering strengthened cross-regional relationships and advanced collaborative approaches to heritage preservation. The exchange focused on building sustainable systems for documenting, protecting, and integrating Black heritage within institutions and communities.

Goals

  • Strengthen Black & Indigenous collaboration grounded in reciprocity and shared protocols

  • Preserve intergenerational oral histories through coordinated documentation

  • Address funding and capacity gaps in Black & Indigenous heritage work

  • Build shared research standards and communication tools

  • Support youth engagement and leadership development

  • Advance coordinated approaches to Black & Indigenous heritage across provinces

Impact

The exchange resulted in shared priorities, a collective action framework, and ongoing regional documentation initiatives. It strengthened governance practices and reinforced the need for sustainable funding and institutional accountability. Insights from the gathering continue to inform heritage infrastructure development in Ottawa and contribute to broader systems change across Canada.
