Founded in 2024 by Daliso (Dali) Mwanza and Graham Nickerson, the Black Heritage Caucus is a partner initiative of the Black Legacy Collective. It serves as a national convening space for Black heritage practitioners, community historians, institutions, and youth across Canada, strengthening Black leadership and advancing inclusive heritage practice.

In 2024, the Caucus launched the first Black Canadian Heritage Roundtable in Montréal, bringing together 19 practitioners from across Canada and the United States. Convened with the National Trust for Canada and the Edmonton Heritage Circle, the roundtable created a national platform for collaboration and capacity building among Black heritage leaders.

The Caucus continued to build national momentum through participation in major heritage forums. In October 2025, Black Heritage Caucus presented From Past to Power: Black Heritage Now! at the National Trust for Canada Conference, Heritage Now!, in Halifax. The session highlighted current Black heritage initiatives: cultural, intangible, and built, uncovering hidden histories and reshaping heritage practice across urban and rural contexts throughout the country.

Through shared visions, the Black Heritage Caucus supports capacity building, fosters new collaborations, and contributes to sector-wide shifts toward a more inclusive representation of Canada’s diversity. This work centres cultural heritage, lived experience, and community knowledge as essential to Canada’s past, present, and future.
